Dying with M.E. A personal view point
A strange title? Dying with M.E. ?? It may be to those who don't have it and don't have to struggle everyday to reach another one, whatever meaning now a day has for it, certainly not a 24 hour period.
I have had M.E. for over a decade now and I can tell you exactly how I got it as can everyone who has M.E. we know how we got it, through a virus infection, in my case flu, what we don't know is why we got it and it is not something that is understood by the medical profession as yet. I used to be able to tell you exactly when, but I can't because of the years my memory has lessoned, part of that might be age, but most of the reason for that is the "brain fogs" that are wiping my memory. This memory loss is another thing I have found talking to others with M.E. is very common.
When it first started I thought it was just a hangover from the flu and that it was taking my body a bit longer to recover, but then the weeks turned into months and I realised that this was different, as it turned out to be. My body, just wouldn't let me do things I could do before I had the flu and the more I tried to do them, the worse I felt and the longer it took me to recover from doing simple tasks. At first I thought maybe I was a bit down, which would have been normal after the flu, (which had been the first time of my having the flu that I had gone to rest with it), but then I began to forget the names of everyday objects or rooms. Most frightening of all was that I found myself at the bottom of the stairs in the home that we were living in at the time and I didn't know how I got there. I had seen a thing about post viral fatigue, but I didn't feel fatigued all the time and still don't, at times my energy levels are normal, it is just when my body starts to play silly buggers that I get worn out.
I wondered if I had had a stroke and looked on line to see if that was a possible answer, before going to the doctor to tell them about things. A serious of test later and there was nothing conclusive shown, so I was left in the dark not knowing what was wrong with me, only that my body wasn't right and I didn't know what it was only that it seemed to be attacking me. It was a friend who was a disability employment officer who said to me, I know what is wrong with you because I have a client with the same symptoms and what you both have is M.E. I then looked up on the internet and came across https://www.hfme.org/ which exactly described me. So with this information I went back to my doctor and told them what I had found and they agreed. In fairness to my doctor at the time I was probably the first person with M.E. that they had come across.
Over the years I know my body has attacked me and that more and more things are going wrong with it. Yes, I had and underactive thyroid before getting M.E. which meant I was immune compromised which possibly meant it could bite harder (but I am not sure if this is a fact as no one really knows as anyone can get it). Yet even this didn't stop me from being mostly healthy and my diet wasn't bad. However to get back, (see how the mind wanders) as my sleep isn't good and I really can not remember the last time I woke up feeling refreshed, my body is more prone to things. I now have to keep taking so called hay fever remedies all the year round, because I can have a reaction to almost anything and I mean almost anything! I am now photophobic and audiophobic (yes I made this word up but you know what I mean) my joints hurt as does my whole body and I have to fall back on medication to bring what relief it can to the pain. There are days, more and more days, when I know my body can not cope with the attack and it gives up.
I really don't want to list everything, because I know that most won't accept that M.E. is causing these things, yes age plays a part, but age just means the body through aging is less able to cope with the attacking all the time.
I have come to accept that very few in the medical profession understand what M.E. actually is and what it does. Most of the time I find myself having to explain things to them and them looking blankly back at me as if I don't know what I am talking about. Yet I, along with others, for I am far from the only doing this, have said things that science now proves we were right ! Just like now when I say, you won't see anything and connect it to M.E., because well all you are seeing is the results of what it is doing. I strongly believe that M.E. attacks and somehow changes our DNA and that somehow changes what our bodies do. It is a only feeling of mine, but one I am surprised that others with M.E. share, because while we feel the effects we know and don't ask me how we know that there is something far deeper happening inside of us. Perhaps if we could all be tested then a conclusion might be made and agreement reached. Again I have my doubts, because as we all have individual DNA so those of us with M.E. are attacked in different ways. Yes we share many of the symptoms, because M.E. produces practically the same results, but it will only be when it is fully understood that M.E. is at best a blanket term for a genetic virus (for want of a better word) we we make the leap forward and be able find a solution to control/cure it, but it will have to be on a genetic level.
I am not being negative with this post, far from it. I just was wondering about the cause of death of people and I can't remember where I saw, but I seem to remember that M.E. is hardly mentioned given what it does to people! I wondered if those whose bodies have been constantly attacked like mine has had died because of it, but the cause of death was recorded as something else or even "natural" ? Knowing how my body is breaking down through these attacks, I know that whenever it happens, the REAL cause of my death will be M.E. and I am okay with that. Which is why I titled this as I have.
I suppose I had better state this just a personal view. I do however really hope that once more we stop linking, lazily CFS with M.E and look at them as connected, as the common cold and flu are, but separately as we do them. Perhaps and only then will we all understand that M.E. needs to be investigated fully and perhaps find a cure and perhaps stop the deaths which I know are happening because of it.
P.S. It has taken me about a month to write this, because previous versions, well even I couldn't understand so I deleted them and this final version has taken a week or so of trying to get it right, but I bet even now it isn't.

Yes dear I still love you
YES DEAR I STILL LOVE YOU
Oh God she's at it again
moaning at everything I do
Oh God why does he have to be
so untidy
Oh now she's moaning that I
never listen
Why is he ignoring me
and looking at the TV
Look at us both
we've grown old together
well past the bloom of youth
No longer nights of passion
No let's do something sexy
more lets try to keep awake so
we can watch that thing on the telly
Oh God now she smiles and my heart melts
She reads me like a book as she always has
When I was younger and she was my Lancashire lass
Oh he's smiling too
We've grown old together you and I
Will be together even when we die
He reads me look a book
I tell he's doing so by his look
Do we really need to say these words
we both know are true
Yes dear I still love you

A meeting with Tim Glover
This Monday, Aly and I met with Tim Clover, who is standing for election in Arbory, Malew and Castletown, this was arranged a few days ago and the first thing to say is that he was on time.
I met Tim many moons ago, more moons than either of us would probably care to remember, but Aly had never met him. For those of you who haven't Tim has a good firm handshake and his body is very open.
Two things from the above. With my back ground I am always analysing and reading, it was a form of protection and still is to a certain degree. Tim passed my trust thingy on that score. Touching is also something I do as it means I get a quick read of a person. Sometimes I have to ask, Tim offered his hand which broke that barrier and my quick read again was okay.
It didn't take long to learn that Tim is indeed deeply rooted in our constituency and knows it very well. This is important, because to an extent it means he is one of our own not someone who thinks I'll come and pretend to be. Asking questions, I was pleased to know that Tim had already been into the Social Housing Areas and regarded them as equally important as other areas, something for the last 10 years we've not felt at all. I believe him when he said he would continue, if elected, regard them as so.
Tim asked questions and really listened. He's been doing the same else and again I know that is true because of the replies he gave regarding DLA which he wouldn't have known if he hadn't. Without going into detail, other probes I did also made me believe that he'd been really out and about and listening.
I was really impressed that he asked me questions about my personal disabilities as he had seen my tag line on twitter about Hidden disability made visible. His questioning about my experience with M. E. was genuine and for the first time in years I thought this is a fella who won't just accept the common line given, but actually take time and learn about things. I was surprised that Aly, my wife who tells me off for lending out books gave him my book on the subject, but I forgot to tell him about the https://www.hfme.org/ site which would give him further information.
Both Aly and I probed him time and time again and while we didn't see eye to eye on everything, we both got the idea that he wasn't fixed completely in his views, although you could see his mind working on many things.
I must admit that at time I had fight brain fog so may have meandered and got some facts wrong, but I got the impression that Tim knew how to see through this.
In many respects I got the feeling with Tim, that he was a conviction driven person and would make a great MHK for that reason. He reminds me of Tony Blair in that regard, in that he believes really believes that things can get better and they should. It won't be easy, but we as a nation stood together during the first lockdown and we can do again.
It would be fair to say that after putting up with the present two so called MHKs I would have voted for a 3 legged blind donkey rather than either of them. They've had their chance, now is time to send them knackers yard of history and I won't shed a single tear when you.
If you get the chance to meet Tim and live down here then take that chance, forget what you think you know listen to him and let him hear your voice, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
So yes we will be voting for him, not because we agree with everything, but you don't have to and yes I will be watching and noting. Honestly, I think given the chance and when a few corners are knocked off and the journalist is fully replaced, that he'll be the MHK we deserve and more importantly need.

The best book I have ever read in the last 30 odd years: Alice Roberts The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being - my review
The Incredible Unlikeliness of Being Evolution and the Making of us, to give it its full title by Professor Alice Roberts, to give her, her full title, is quite simply the best book I have ever read in the last 30 odd years! (Perhaps the only book that beats it of all my books of all time is The Chrysalids By John Wyndham which I have loved since I was a child. Actually there was a cross over between the two books in the very last chapter of Professor Robert's book, which I won't spoil, but made me want to re-read The Chrysalids again with different eyes, knowing what he wrote 66 years ago is entirely possible to happen as part of our incredible stages of evolution.)
Okay so that is the introduction to my review. In honesty I got the book, because it was by Alice and I was intrigued by the title. What on earth did she mean by this and what wonderful journey lay within its covers? So I ordered it, as I always do from Bridge Book Shop which is where I get all my books from. A few days later, thanks to lockdown it was delivered via the postie and I opened up the parcel to the most wonderful smell that only new books have ( the smell of brain nectar) and I saw this wonderful colour feast of the cover and I was hooked.
This is not a book that you read, it is an orgasm of the mind, were you find something new 0n every page to go wow or hoo, whatever sound comes out when you express shear pleasure. You will find your self doing the things that Alice is telling you to do, even when you don't really realise you are doing and that is part, just part of the many joys of this book.
Alice doesn't talk above you, more shares and explains, words and ideas, that otherwise would be hard to understand. For this book works on the levels where those who know things and most of us who don't know much, both types will go along and enjoy the experience. This is done without endless footnotes which I personally find off putting, it is done in the text body so you don't have to pause in your reading!
As you read along, you learn how wonderful things are the whole life with its interconnections and more being found and how we are all just one big family not a simple act of one creation, but of creations, mistakes oh and let's start again. You also fully understand why the title is as it is.
By the time I had read the last page I wanted to stand up and applaud the author/tutor for their marvellous work. While many will only know Professor Roberts through her television work, this is what, I personally think she does best, educate and her love of doing so is the brightest light of the book.
It is not lightly that I state this is the best book I have read, because I have read hundreds, possibly thousands and this certainly of my non-fiction books it really leaps to head of them all.
THIS REALLY IS A MUST HAVE BOOK AND THERE IS NOTHING MORE TO SAY OTHER THAN THANK YOU ALICE BECAUSE EVEN AS I AM TYPING THIS I AM THINKING HOW WONDERFUL IT IS THAT I CAN DO SO AND I WILL NEVER LOOK AT ANOTHER LIVING BEING AGAIN WITHOUT THAT EXTRA INSIGHT INTO HOW INCREDIBLE IT IS.

Mental Health Awareness
I am writing this because I am not afraid of the fact that there have been a few times that my mental health has suffered. Now in 2021 there are many millions who thanks to Covid 19 will also be suffering with their mental health. It may be that many of these already had issues that they ignored, but now can no longer do so.
As I look on social media, I see some who admit to various forms of mental health issues and some whom I know have them and yet seem oblivious to them and it is those whom I worry about most.
Perhaps I am lucky with the other things I have that I can see things in others and my own experiences of my mental health has made me more aware of the importance of keeping good mental health than others may be.
Okay, so during this week, there are some things that we can all do to help ourselves and others. Now I am no expert and I do not pretend to be so, but I think I have an understanding so these are my things
1: TALK ABOUT HOW YOU ARE FEELING, YOU'LL BE SURPRISED HOW MANY OTHERS ARE FEELING THE SAME WAY
3: ASK YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY AND LOVED ONES, THOSE YOU WORK WITH ETC., ARE YOU OKAY AND LISTEN TO WHAT THEY SAY TO YOU
SOME OF YOU MAY NOTICE I HAVE MISSED TWO OUT HERE, I SHALL LEAVE THAT FOR YOU TO FILL IN, IN YOUR OWN WORDS
IN MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK, IF WE ALL TOOK TIME TO PAUSE, TO ASK ARE WE AND ARE OTHERS OKAY WE WILL BE DOING A GREAT DEAL
FINALLY REMEMBER JUST LIKE A BROKEN BONE, IF YOU ARE SUFFERING AT ALL REMEMBER IT MIGHT BE A RIGHT PAIN AND SEEM IT WILL NEVER BE FIXED BUT IT WILL AND YOU'LL FEEL BETTER AS A RESULT
SO IN MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK - DO YOUR OWN MENTAL HEALTH M.O.T. YOU MIGHT PASS WITH FLYING COLOURS, BUT IF YOU DON'T THEN DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP
